Juaquin specializes in students applying to competitive and/or highly selective schools, students seeking help to uncover their passions, students interested in liberal arts, international students, student athletes, artists, transfer students, and underrepresented students.
Juaquin is passionate about helping students find their path to college in a way that allows them to understand the bigger vision of what they’re trying to accomplish and feel good about who they are. He believes the college admissions process is much more than just an application. It’s about self-discovery, meeting deadlines, having a strategy, and setting and accomplishing goals. As an Ivywise counselor, Juaquin offers a highly individualized and personalized approach that meets each student where they’re at.
Formerly an admissions officer at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Juaquin has worked with students from across the U.S. and most recently advised international students on the highly selective admission process. He was also a senior interviewer at his alma mater, Wesleyan University Juaquin served on the College Fair Board for the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and has presented on various college admission topics at regional and national conferences.
His passion for college admissions led Juaquin to develop and direct the college counseling department at a leading independent private school in his hometown of Albuquerque, NM, for over a decade. He is committed to increasing access to education and is currently the founder and executive director of a college access non-profit organization.
As a former member of the Call to Action Board on diversity for the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), Juaquin has close to two decades of experience helping all types of students find their voice. Juaquin previously received the Yale Educator of the Year Award for his outstanding college counseling.
Juaquin speaks Spanish and was a Division I recruited college athlete who swam Division III in college. Juaquin has returned to the pool, after a 12-year hiatus, to train and compete both nationally and internationally in U.S. masters and international swim meets.
